Avoid The Quarantine Blues

Well, here we are again...blogging. Did you miss me?

We are on day 50 (?) of quarantine here in Chicago, and I can honestly say that some days I feel as if i am standing on my head and spinning. As I am sure we are all losing our grasp a little.

There are only so many hours of TV and reading I can handle.

As I was sitting on my couch, which has an easily defined crater of my ass now, I was struck by the lack of work I had been putting into My Tiny Cook Spot. As you can imagine, when this all started, I needed some time to collect myself. Our world was changing drastically and it seemed like every day I was finding out something else that made me want to crawl in a hole. I am sure you can relate.

The Pod had to go on a break, that was clear seeing as I could no longer invite people into my home to cook and record. This meant that posting here came to a stop as well, and that is a real bummer.

If you follow me on Instagram, @mytinycookspot, you noticed I am still cooking up a storm, but have not had the focus to push the content beyond a simple Instagram post. I need to light that fire again, so here we are striking a match as best we can.

This lack of focus was leaving me blue. Of course, there have been some good days during all of this, days I (re)discover skills and passions. With that, let’s get away from the heavy stuff and here is a list of a few things I have been doing to keep myself from talking to my walls:

  • Getting into sourdough!

  1. Some of the great recipes I have been trying beyond regular bread!! To ANY reader out there, if you have some favorites please let me know.

  2. King Arthur Flour : I make the Crumpets and the Crackers pretty much every week.

  3. Little Spoon Farm: Created the BEST pizza I have had in Chicago, that is right I said it!

  5. BAKED the blog: This NO KNEAD Cinnamon Raisin Bread is everything! I subbed the raisins for craisins (no regrets)

  6. The Spruce Eats: Sourdough Pancakes, seriously my pancake game has never been better. Try subbing with whole wheat flour!

  • Exercising multiple times a week (because...sourdough)

  1. Support a local yoga studio (the instructors at Yoggic are FANTASTIC) by taking a virtual class. It also allows you to connect with others for about an hour

  2. Dance around and work up a sweat with a youtube channel (The Fitness Marshall makes me laugh to drown out my screaming muscles)

  3. Run….I hate every second of it.

  4. Feeling strong with a Hiit or Shadow Box class, a lot of local gyms are doing FREE IG live sessions.

  • Create Art

  1. My stepmom has asked for a set of watercolors and I AM ON IT!

  2. Adult Coloring Books are a wonderful way to get in touch with your inner kid, it is even better with wine

  • Craft!

  1. I have popsicle sticks arriving in the mail to make hexagon boxes.

  2. A friend of mine went ham with tie dye

  • Taking a course through Coursera

  1. The Science of Wellbeing- a Yale Course (FREE) : The reasoning behind why some things make us happy and how others we think will make us happy may not (or not as much).

  • Meditate

  1. Samsung Health app 5 min Body Scan

  2. Disconnecting from a screen before going to bed and just sitting, not with my thoughts, but taking stock of my body and how it is feeling is wonderful.

  • Journal

  1. Keeping a checklist journal that is making me reflect on what I am grateful for (recommended from my class on Coursera)

  • Blog! I have a goal to breathe life into this again by sitting down as much as possible to reflect and put a post together.

Are there things you are doing that I should try? I will try almost anything to avoid sitting and staring at a wall (it has happened multiple times over the past 50 days).
